My Child is Using DrugsMy Child is Using Drugs

“I think my son might be using drugs. He’s different now. He gets so angry over the smallest things, he doesn’t hang out with any of his old friends anymore … he doesn’t even look the same. When we do talk—which is rare—it always seems to be about him needing money for something. What do I do?”

This can be one of a parent’s worst fears—but there are answers out there to help you and your child get through this.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Your child may feel just as frightened and out-of-control as you are feeling right now.

  • If necessary, you can use drug screening test to find out the truth. This can usually be done in a doctor’s office, walk-in clinic, or even through home-testing kits.

  • If drug use is confirmed, outside help from professionals may be necessary to help your child deal with their use and/or addiction. Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or pastor to find out what options are available in your community.

  • If drug use is confirmed, consider community peer support groups for parents and family members through a local church or program such as Nar-Anon.

How Lifeline Can Help:

  • Home-Based Services – We bring help to you. One of our caring staff will meet with you and your family in your own home to talk about the problems and map out some real solutions.

  • Residential Care – In more serious situations, we have group homes to temporarily care for children who are in a crisis situation or who need a “wake-up” call.

  • Responsible Thinking Classes – Join a class with other parents who are dealing with similar issues. Together you’ll learn about the thought patterns that may be tripping your family up—and more importantly, how to combat them.
